چکیده مقاله:

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is the most common disorder of carbohydrate metabolism. Hyperglycemia is the common feature of DM. Hyperglycemia causes cardiovascular, renal, ocular, and peripheral nerve disorders in patients with diabetes. Glycemic regulation plays an essential role in controlling these complications. Thus, evaluation of the glycemic control status is crucial in the management of DM. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is the most common methods that used to assess the glycemic status of patients with diabetes. The present review article aims to explore the analytical and clinical aspects of HbA1c.

Measurement of Hemoglobin A1c

Evaluation of glycemia is used for the diagnosis and management of patients with diabetes. Glucose and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) provide complementary information and both are used to assess an individual’s glycemic status. The concentration of glucose in the blood indicates the subject’s glycemia at the time of blood sampling. However, blood glucose concentrations are modified by numerous factors...

Unexpected hemoglobin A1c results.

A 52-year-old woman with a medical history of hepatitis B, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, anemia, and depression presented to the internal medicine clinic for a routine visit. Laboratory tests 3 months previously had revealed an impaired fasting glucose concentration of 5.9 mmol/L (106 mg/dL) [reference interval, 3.9 –5.6 mmol/L (70 –100 mg/dL)]. Therefore, a hemoglobin (Hb) A1c analysis was per...

Influence of variables on hemoglobin A1c values and nonheterogeneity of hemoglobin A1c reference ranges.

INTRODUCTION Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) values are influenced by analytical interferences such as HbF and hemoglobin variants and clinical factors such as increased red cell turnover. Although less well-known, demographic factors such as race, age, and sex also influence HbA1c values. The HbA1c reference range should be homogenous in the United States based on the use of National Glycohemoglobin St...

The Analytical Goals for Hemoglobin A1c Measurement in IFCC Units and National Glycohemoglobin Standardization

The variation of a biological measurand can be expressed in the units of the measured concentrations or as a percentage of the absolute variation relative to the mean concentration. For example, given that different metrologic systems are in use for the measurement of human body temperature, this parameter can be expressed in degrees Celsius (Europe), degrees Fahrenheit (US), or degrees Kelvin ...
